Folic Acid (also known as Folate) is one of the B-complex vitamins. It regulates protein metabolism and supports vitamin B-12 in the formation of red blood cells, required for cell division. Researcher’s at the Dr. Linus Pauling Institute claim ‘there exists ample scientific evidence to suggest that adequate Folate intake is helpful in lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, some forms of cancer, neural tube defects and other poor outcomes of pregnancy’. In addition, Folic Acid deficiency is linked to Osteoporosis, Anemia, and Depression.

Deficiency of Folic Acid may result from low dietary intake, prescription drugs, large doses of aspirin or ibuprofen, diminished absorption capacity, or in women taking birth control pills. As significant protection from many diseases have been associated with low levels of Folic Acid, researcher's at the University of Ulster in Dublin, Ireland, recommend supplementing with vitamins, as even diets rich in Folic Acid ‘may not be enough to maintain the level needed to stave off Heart Disease’. The recommended intake of Folic Acid for men and non-pregnant women is 400 micrograms (mcg)/day, and for pregnant women, 600 mcg/day. For Doctor formulated supplements, please see link to home page.

Examples of Folate Rich Food Sources:

6 ounces of orange juice (from concentrate) = 82 mcg

1/2 cup cooked spinach = 131 mcg

6 spears of asparagus = 131 mcg

1/2 cup cooked lentils 179 mcg

1/2 cup cooked garbanzo beans = 141 mcg

1/2 cup cooked lima beans = 78 mcg

Folic Acid rich foods also include oranges, dark green leafy vegetables, dry beans, peas, organ meats, fortified cereals and grain products, and vegetables.
