Echinacea - A potent immune system builder |

February 09, 2003 By: Stacey Becker Echinacea - A potent immune system builder
Echinacea is widely known for its ability to fight against colds and flu, acting as a potent broad-spectrum immune stimulant. Also known as Purple Coneflower or Snake Root, Echinacea is one of the most common herbal medicines sold. The most popular types include Purporea, and Angustafolia. It is often combined with Golden Seal, which is believed to enhance its potency and effectiveness. The root, root juice, flowers, and seeds of the Echinacea plant are used to make supplements, extracts or teas. A common myth concerning Echinacea is that it acts as a 'natural antibiotic' and kills the bacteria and viruses that cause illness. In fact, Echinacea has a positive effect on the body’s immune system, defending against invading organisms. Echinacea is effective against a number of different bacteria, viruses, and fungi and nourishes the body while recovering from existing illness and chronic immune disorders. It is recommended to start taking Echinacea immediately upon first symptoms of illness, to assist the body in preventing or decreasing the severity of the illness. Supplementing with herbal echinacea is considered safe, as side effects appear to be rare. It should not be used as an every day tonic as its effectiveness is enhanced only when the body needs it. Consider consulting a health care professional for recommended use for any of the following conditions: *if you are allergic to ragweed or sunflower family plants *if you suffer from chronic immune illnesses or progressive conditions, such as MS or diabetes *if you are pregnant or breast feeding Author Notes:
