What zinc is and how it can effect you

Zinc is a mineral found in almost every cell. Zinc helps enzymes do their job and helps promote healing by supporting the immune system. It also promotes growth from pregnancy through to adolescence. It can be found in many foods, but mostly in meat and poultry.

Signs of zinc deficiency can be hair loss, impotence, poor healing of wounds, diarrhea and many other things. Since these symptoms can be signs of deficiency of other minerals and vitamins, it is important to consult with your doctor on the best course of action to take. There is no real way to test deficiency of this essential mineral, but your doctor will look at other things such as lifestyle and past medical problems that may also be signs of a deficiency.

Severe zinc deficiency can cause wounds to heal poorly. Alcoholics are at particular risk because alcohol reduces the amount the body is able to absorb. Poor diet also contributes to deficiency in alcoholics. Even small amounts of deficiency can greatly reduce the body's immune system, making it perhaps one of the more important minerals to take.
